EXT. PARK BENCH - DAY
JOHN is sitting alone on one end of the park bench.

MARY walks up and sits on the other end of the bench.  A space is in between
them.

  Silence.

            MARY
        Sorry.

            JOHN
        Don't want to hear it.

            MARY
I'm here because I want to explain.

            JOHN
Yeah, well, that time is past.

            MARY
        It doesn't have to be.

            JOHN
I'm kind of sick of this little dance we do.
I'm sick of trying to figure you out.  I'm sick
        of everything.

.

            MARY
        I don't blame you.

            JOHN
You just don't get it.  You're going to wind
up a lonely, bitter old lady with a bunch of
        cats and a shot gun.

            MARY
        Fine by me.

            JOHN
        Don't give me that !

            MARY
        I'm agreeing with you.

            JOHN
I don't want you to agree with me !

            MARY
        You're right.

            JOHN
        THERE YOU GO AGAIN !

            MARY
        Okay, I'll stop.

Silence.

            MARY
You can get really intense sometimes.

            JOHN
        You make me that way.

            MARY
I tried to warn you not to get involved with me.

            JOHN
Yeah, and I didn't pay attention.

            MARY
        Which is why I'm sorry.

JOHN begins to say something, MARY cuts him off.

            MARY
I'm sorry that I'm afraid of you.

JOHN is shocked by this.

JOHN and MARY start talking, but don't look at each other.

            JOHN
        Afraid ?

            MARY
I know that we made plans to hang out ...
made plans several times .. And I always
canceled at the last minute ...

            JOHN
        Afraid of me ?

            MARY
I don't know why I did that to you.  It
just felt like the right thing to do.  I don't
know why I even do half of the things I do.

            JOHN
Why would you be afraid of me ?

            MARY
A nice guy comes along and I treat him like
dirt.  I always fall for the guys who end up
treating me like dirt.  What is it with me and
        dirt ?

Silence.

JOHN feels that he has the answer. He looks at her.

            JOHN
        I'm perfect for you.

MARY nods yes.

            JOHN
        And that's what scares you.

MARY nods yes.

            JOHN
Oh, okay.  A beautiful woman, can't be my
girlfriend, because we're perfect for each
        other.

            MARY
I'm afraid of things being perfect.

JOHN stands up and walks away.  MARY is left alone.

Beat.

JOHN walks back to the bench and sits right next to MARY.

            JOHN
        I'm not afraid of you.

            MARY
        You should be.

            JOHN
        You can't agree with me.

            MARY
        I won't.

            JOHN
        Don't go out with me.

            MARY
        I can't.

            JOHN
Never fall in love with me.

            MARY
        If you say so.

            JOHN
        Do you hate me ?

            MARY
        How could I ?

            JOHN
        You could show me.

            MARY
That would take a lot of time.

            JOHN
        Sounds intense.

            MARY
        I don't agree with that.

JOHN smiles.

            JOHN
Cool !  We're making progress.  You better
        not kiss me.

            MARY
And sex is totally out of the question !

            JOHN
        Now, I'm sorry.

BEAT.

JOHN and MARY laugh.   They both smile.  JOHN politely reaches out for MARY's
hand.

MARY is reluctant at first, then clasps JOHN's hand.

They walk off together.

            MARY
Not as sorry as you're gonna be.

JOHN stops, stares at MARY, then plants a kiss on her.

They smile again, then walk away together, arm in arm.
