The Idea

Produce our own video?!? A Video Distribution company producing it's own short?  What a novel concept!  Hmm .. think of the hassles we can avoid!   No Groveling to "Hollywood" types!  What does it take besides a cool camcorder( Canon GL1), more digital video editing tools (Mac G4 and Final Cut Pro 1.2) than Michael Ovitz's son, and a credit card with no balance?  Think Simple.  Be Different.  All we need is a story (check), actors (check), a place where we can shoot with minimal liscensing requirements (our own back room, check), edit it ourselves (college degree in art criticism, wrote a few term papers, check), all with a piggy bank budget (still have those day jobs!).  But wait!  We'll document the making of our own short and have  two videos in one-documentary AND comedy!!

The Script

A big Thanks To Steve Strangio for his script "Just These Two". Steve lives in New York and  contacted me about collaborating on a project. How about that for making the Internet work for ya? East Coast meets West Coast.
The script "Just These Two" is a quirky comedy/drama about a couple trying to understand their relationship during dinner.
Martin's interpretation of the theme is space. So it must start off with a big space between them which gradually grows smaller as they resolve their issues and become more intimate. There's also a dialog dance with short and long interjections.
Interesting note: Steve starts the scene with her saying she's sorry and ends it with him saying he's sorry. Am I reading too much into this?  The scene begins with John proposing. To add more depth to Lisa's character, we gave her a hip profession in a soon to be IPO Internet company.

Screenwriter, voiceover announcer, "Cracked" magazine writer, stand-up comic, film, television, and radio actor describe Steve's diverse career.
Steve is currently shopping around the screenplay  "Journey to the Strip Mall" , promoting a comedy/horror interactive spoof screenplay "Disco Zombie Beach Massacre" and a romantic/comedy play "Someone to Love",   pitching three other screenplays to independent producers, and paying the bills with  voiceovers and acting jobs in television and film. ... The Talent

T he script revolves around a man and a woman.  The acting will have to be top notch because it takes place in one spot and will be played on a tiny 2 inch screen.   My tripod will get good use-not much happens camera-wise.  Two very professional actors, Sergei and Lisa were recommended.
When we sat down for a read through Lisa and Sergei had a lot of ideas about adding more depth to their characters.  We also changed the setting from a park bench to a restaurant.  Lisa suggested that the actors have a scenario in mind that leads to the beginning of the scene and an idea of what happens after the scene.  This way they were able to "get" into the characters heads and present a more believable story.  Remember the old line "What's my motivation?"
